2013 Melbourne Cup Second Acceptances Released

October 29th, 2013

The 2013 Melbourne Cup is now only seven days away and 47 horses remain in the hunt to contest the $6 million Group 1 event at Flemington after the second acceptances were released by Racing Victoria yesterday afternoon.

Gai Waterhouse-trained Fiorente has been on top of 2013 Melbourne Cup betting markets since his fast-finishing effort in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) and he did his chances no harm with a strong third place finish behind Shamus Award in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Waterhouse, who is chasing her first ever victory in the Melbourne Cup, admitted that she was worried that the strong Cox Plate performance may have taken some energy out of Fiorente’s tank said she was delighted with the way that son of Monsun had recovered from the run.

“He pulled up really well and went to the beach this morning,” Waterhouse said.

“He’s really happy horse.

“I asked Damien if he thought it had been too much of a gut-buster and he told me the run was exactly what he wished the horse would have.”

The other big market mover coming out of the Cox Plate was Lloyd Williams-owned Seville who is now into Melbourne Cup odds of $14 after he followed up his victory in The Metropolitan (2400m) with a strong effort in the Australasian Weight-For-Age Championship.

The Macedon Lodge team is expected to have Seville, Green Moon, Sea Moon, Masked Marvel, Mourayan and Fawkner in the 2013 Melbourne Cup field but rates Seville his best chance in the race.

“Seville is in perfect order and he is probably the horse of ours that ticked all the boxes along the way,” Williams said.

The 2013 Melbourne Cup is set to have a record international contingent and a number of European-trained stayers have been well backed since arriving in Australia and settling in at the International Equine Centre just over a week ago.

Luca Cumani-trained Mount Athos, French stayer Verema, Irish St Leger winner Voleuse De Coeurs and Godolphin hope Royal Empire have all received plenty of support; with punters confident that the Melbourne Cup will be returning to Europe for the third time in four years.
